When I was younger, many of my friends went backpacking, but I chose to jump straight into work instead. It wasn’t until I was married and had children—a son and a daughter—that I realized I didn’t want to miss out on that kind of experience. So, we set off for an adventure in Thailand and Vietnam. Along the way, we met incredible people through homestays, volunteered in schools, trekked through mountains, spent time on beautiful islands, and created unforgettable memories.

As a photographer, I captured hundreds of moments, but one of the most special memories came on our last day in Vietnam. We wandered into a small painting shop and struck up a conversation with the owner. There, we found a stunning oil painting, an abstract piece that captured the essence of the town we had been staying in. We had it carefully rolled up, brought it home, and later had it framed. Today, it holds pride of place in our hallway, and it’s one of the first things visitors notice when they enter our home. They always ask about it, giving me the chance to share the story and remind us all of the amazing adventure we had with our kids.

I have a photograph of my late Border Collie, Flynn, that holds a special place in my home and heart. I had been honing my photography skills for months, with a focus on pet photography, in hopes of eventually entering competitions. Sadly, before I could get to that point, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put Flynn to sleep.

The photo I have of him was taken during our last walk, just before the vet appointment. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and Flynn looked so happy, perched on his favorite tree stump, doing what he loved most—being with us. A few months later, as I was editing the image, I felt a strong urge to submit it to a competition—not because it was technically perfect but because it meant so much to me and felt like a tribute to Flynn.

To my surprise, that photo went on to win multiple bronze awards in competitions. It now hangs proudly on my wall, not just as a testament to my photography journey but as a lasting memory of Flynn and the joy he brought into our lives.

Out of every photograph in my house, the one that makes my heart do a little flip is the photo of the first time my daughter held her baby brother. They are now 10 and 8, and these moments of affection are rare! Every time I catch sight of the photo, it takes me back to that moment, and it's a magical feeling. Is the light beautiful in the photo? No! Is it taken in a stunning setting? Definitely not! It was taken in a hospital. What's important to me, though, is that I can remember every emotion I felt at that moment just by looking at the photo. I'm now a professional photographer, and capturing moments like this for other families is so wonderful. I am a fan of gorgeous light and stunning settings too, though, if I'm honest!
